The diagnostic value of procalcitonin factor in detection of patients with suspected appendicitis has been reported somewhat confusing in recent studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the level of procalcitonin in patients with suspected appendicitis referred to 5 Azar and Sayad Hospital, Gorgan, Iran, in 2020. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, the serum procalcitonin levels were measured in 120 patients with suspected appendicitis who underwent appendectomy surgery. The histopathology reports of appendectomy was the basis for diagnosis and the serum levels of procalcitonin were measured by chemiluminescence method. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 19.0, SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). Results: In general, the mean age of 120 patients participated in this study was 30.96 ±12.81. Women comprised 38.5% (45 patients) of the study population. The false and true appendectomy rate for appendicitis was 15 (12.5%) and 105 cases (87.5%), respectively. The difference between the mean levels of procalcitonin in the false and true appendectomy cases was statistically significant (p = 0.04). The mean level of procalcitonin in the true and false appendectomy cases was 2.30±8.75 and 0.07 ± 0.03(P=0.004), respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the measurement of procalcitonin levels can be helpful in diagnosing acute appendicitis in complicated cases. %> http://jms.thums.ac.ir/article-1-928-en.pdf %P 25-36 %& 25 %! %9 Research %L A-10-1066-1 %+ School of Medicine, Golestan University of Medical Sciences, Gorgan, Iran %G eng %@ 2716-9669 %[ 2021
