Background & Aim: Nursing is one of the most important professions, which requires providing appropriate conditions to enhance happiness and professional interest among nurses working in hospitals. The present study aimed to predict professional interests and happiness among nurses in Bandar Abbas hospitals based on early maladaptive schemas.
Methods: A total of 270 nurses working in hospitals in Bandar Abbas were selected through multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Professional Interests Questionnaire, Young’s Schema Questionnaire, and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 26, applying Pearson correlation coefficients and regression analyses simultaneously.
Results: Regression model coefficients showed that among early maladaptive schemas, separation/rejection (β=–0.16), hyper-vigilance and inhibition (β=–0.18) and unrelenting standards/over-criticism (β=–0.25), mistrust/abuse (β=–0.12), impaired autonomy and performance (β=–0.11), vulnerability to harm or illness (β=–0.13), insufficient self-control/self-discipline (β = –0.12), and other-directedness include of obedience (β=–0.15), self-sacrifice (β=–0.14) were statistically significant and negatively predicted nurses’ happiness. Furthermore, among early maladaptive schemas, mistrust/abuse (β=–0.16), un-evolved self (β=–0.17), social isolation/alienation (β=–0.19), impaired autonomy and performance (β=–0.22), and hyper-vigilance and inhibition (β= –0.27) were statistically significant and predicted professional interests significantly.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that early maladaptive schemas are among the key factors contributing to reduced happiness and professional interest among nurses. Therefore, preventive and corrective strategies should be implemented to address these schemas in the nursing workforce.
