Background & Aim: Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders and is recognized as one of the most disabling chronic conditions worldwide. Given the role of healthcare workers’ awareness in preventing occupational injuries, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of low back pain and the level of awareness of risk factors for low back pain among operating room staff in hospitals in Hamadan, Iran.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 among 350 operating room staff members working in hospitals affiliated with Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. The sample size was determined using a census method. A questionnaire developed by Tavakol et al., consisting of three sections addressing demographic characteristics, the prevalence and dimensions of low back pain, and awareness of risk factors for low back pain, was completed by the participants. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test in SPSS version 22.
Results: 275(78.3%) participants, reported a history of low back pain. Among the operating rooms investigated, the highest prevalence of low back pain was observed in the oral and maxillofacial surgery operating rooms. In addition, the majority of participants (56.3%) had a high level of awareness. However, no significant association was found between the prevalence of low back pain and the staff’s level of awareness of risk factors associated with low back pain(P= 0.55).
Conclusion: Given that the operating room is one of the most important hospital departments and involves sensitive and high-risk working conditions, managers of these departments should develop appropriate programs to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and increase staff awareness of risk factors.
