Background : Natura-ceutical antioxidants increases plasma antioxidant power , and reduce risk of diseases such as cancer , heart disease, and stroke . Therefore , in this study, we will determine the effect of marjoram on blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability and neurologic deficits caused by stroke .

Methods: In this experimental study , 35 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=7) . First groups (control) received distilled water, while other three treatment groups, received oral Origanum vulgare extract for 30 days (50, 75 and 100 mg/kg/day, respectively). Thereafter, each main group underwent 60min middle cerebral artery occlusion 2hours after the lost dose of Origanum extracts. Assessment of blood brain barrier permeability and neurologic deficit score was done 24 hours . Sham groups (n=7) did not receive pretreatment and ischemia induction procedures.

Results: The hydroalcoholic extract of Origanum reduced permeability of the blood brain barrier and neurologic deficits in three doses 50, 75 and 100mg/kg compared with control group.

Conclusion: It seems that the extract of Origanum due to have effective antioxidant compounds , has a protective effect on stroke .
