Background & Aim: This research aimed to explore the predictive relationship between students' attitudes towards addiction and social support, while examining the mediating effects of intolerance and difficulties in emotional regulation. The study involved 388 high school students from Bandar Turkmen using a descriptive correlational design.
Methods: The present study was a correlational research using structural equation modeling. Among the second-year high school students of Bandar Turkmen city (girls/boys), 388 people were selected as the research sample using cluster sampling method. The measurement tools included Zimet's Perceived Social Support Questionnaire, Harrington's Intolerance of Frustration, Gratz and Romer's Difficulty in Emotion Regulation, and Delaware Drug Attitude Scale. Test analysis using SPSS 22 and Amos 24 software showed that the structural model of the research has a good and acceptable fit with the research data.
Results: The results showed a significant negative effect of perceived social support on attitudes towards addiction (β = -0.16, p < 0.04) and a positive effect of difficulties in emotional regulation (β = 0.20, p < 0.00). The effect of failure tolerance on attitudes towards addiction was not significant (β = -0.003, p < 0.98). Perceived social support negatively influenced both intolerance of failure (β = 0.31, p < 0.00) and difficulties in emotional regulation (β = 0.22, p < 0.00). Importantly, while intolerance of failure did not mediate the relationship between social support and attitudes towards addiction, difficulties in emotional regulation fully mediated this relationship.
Conclusion: The study highlights the need for centers focused on life skills education and family counseling to improve emotional regulation and failure tolerance among students, which is crucial for enhancing mental health and preventing addiction among adolescents.
