Background & Aim: The study of aging and its changes over the years, as well as identifying the factors that influence this process, has great importance. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between age stereotypes and cognitive ability in older adults, and to analyze the mediating role of awareness of age-related changes.
Methods: This study employed a correlational design of the structural type. The study population consisted of all older adults residing in nursing homes (Mehregan, Mehrnikan, and Eram centers) in December 2023. A total of 230 eligible participants were selected through convenience sampling. The participants completed Nosrati et al.’s Age Stereotypes Questionnaire (2022), Nejati’s Cognitive Ability Questionnaire (2013), and the Awareness of Age-Related Changes Questionnaire by Nosrati et al. (2023). Data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and structural equation modeling via SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24.
Results: The findings showed a positive and significant correlation between age stereotypes and cognitive abilities (r = 0.390, p = 0.001). There was also a positive and significant correlation between negative age-related changes and cognitive abilities (r = 0.347, p = 0.001). However, no significant correlation was found between positive and negative age-related changes and age stereotypes.
Conclusion: Based on the confirmation of the research model, it appears that older adults’ awareness of age-related changes can play an important role in their cognitive abilities. The results of this study may be useful for professionals working in the field of aging.
