Background & Aim: Emotional intelligence is crucial for the development of identity coherence, and professional competence. Since clinical competence has a unique position in the nursing profession as a clinical discipline. the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and clinical competence among nursing students at Khalkhal University of Medical Sciences.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 168 nursing students selected concensusly from the second, third, and fourth years of nursing at Khalkhal School of Medical Sciences during the academic year 2023-2024. The data collection tools used in this study were the Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Scale (I-EQ) and the Leo Clinical Competency Assessment Questionnaire (2007). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 statistical software and descriptive statistical analyses, Pearson correlation coefficient, and t-test (P < 0.05).
Results: In this study, 168 undergraduate nursing students from Khalkhal School of Medical Sciences participated, of whom 104 (61.8%) were female, 27 (15.5%) were native and 141 (84.5%) were non-native. The average age of the students was 22.65 ± 2.24. The mean and standard deviation of the emotional intelligence score of the nursing students were 319.97 ± 32.08, and for clinical competence, it was 229.76 ± 2.29. A positive and significant correlation was found between emotional intelligence and clinical competence (R = 0.634, P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The acquisition of clinical qualifications plays a crucial role in students' future career success due to the direct correlation between emotional intelligence and clinical competence. Therefore, it is necessary for professors to provide programs that improve specific aspects of emotional intelligence. In addition, there is a need to develop effective strategies, educational sessions and workshops to address demographic factors to increase the level of emotional intelligence among nursing students.
