Background & Aim: Substance use disorder comprehensively affects on individual's life. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the family emotional climate and marital burnout between individuals undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and those with drug addiction.
Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study was conducted using convenience sampling. The statistical population included women and adolescent children of male patients referred to the "Nejat" addiction treatment center in Mashhad in the winter of 1403. The research instruments included a demographic questionnaire, the Pines Marital Burnout Scale (1996), and the Hillburn Family Emotional Climate Scale (1964). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 28 at a significance level of P < 0.05..
Results: The study included 100 adolescents (mean age = 15.2 ± 2.1 years) and 100 women (mean age = 40.1 ± 8.3 years) in the treatment group, and 100 adolescents (mean age = 15.5 ± 2.3 years) and 100 women (mean age = 42.1 ± 8.5 years) in the non-treatment group. Analysis of variance revealed no significant differences in family emotional climate between adolescents whose fathers were undergoing methadone treatment and those with addicted fathers (p > 0.50, F(1, 197) = 0.13), nor in marital burnout between women whose spouses were receiving methadone treatment and those with untreated addicted spouses (p > 0.50, F(1, 197) = 0.18).
Conclusion: It is recommended that addiction treatment center administrators organize educational sessions to raise awareness about the effects of methadone treatment on family emotional climate and marital burnout.
