Background & Aim: One of the main issues associated with the use of egg donation is the disclosure or non-disclosure of this method. To prevent and alleviate tensions that may arise during the disclosure process, it is essential to identify the challenges related to disclosing pregnancy with egg donation. Therefore, this study aims to determine the disclosure challenges in pregnancies involving egg donation.
Methods: This review, involved the examination of qualitative and quantitative articles from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, SID, Magiran, and Google Scholar, using keywords like disclosure, confidentiality, donated eggs, and third-party fertilization along with their English equivalents, without any time restricted up to September 2024. Studies in Persian and English related to disclosure and pregnancy with donated eggs were included, while those with relevant content, only abstracts, or repetitive studies were excluded.
Results: A review of 59 studies on pregnancy with donated eggs and disclosure, revealed that the key concepts in the field of disclosure primarily revolved around four areas: the desire for confidentiality and anonymity of the donor, the challenge of disclosing the truth to the child, facial resemblance, and the fear of judgment.
Conclusion: Based on the challenges identified in this study regarding disclosure, it appears crucial to plan for specialized counseling to assist families with children born from egg donation in making informed decisions about disclosure.
