Background & Aim: Training, along with having an informed supporter for pregnant mothers can play a key role in reducing the fear of natural childbirth and decreasing the inclination towards cesarean delivery. With the high prevalence of cesarean sections and the conflicting findings regarding the outcomes of involving a supporter in prenatal education, this research was conducted to determine the impact of companion education on the intention to choose the type of delivery among pregnant women.
Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized clinical trial on 60 first-time pregnant mothers visiting Om al-Banin Hospital in Mashhad. Participants were selected through convenience sampling and were randomly divided into two groups: control and intervention. In the control group (30 persons), childbirth preparation classes were held over 8 sessions. In the intervention group (30 persons), in addition to these sessions, two collaborative sessions for mothers and companions and two separate sessions for companions were held based on Bandura's theory. Before and after the intervention, both groups completed demographic characteristics and childbirth outcome expectation questionnaires (Louie, 1993). The data was analyzed using SPSS version 16, and a significance level of less than 0.05 was considered.
Results: The average age of mothers in the intervention group was 26.7 ± 3.8 years, while in the control group it was 28.3 ± 5.9 years. Prior to the intervention, none of the mothers in either group had intended to have a natural birth. However, after the intervention, 28 mothers (93.3%) in the intervention group, expressed their intention to have a natural birth, compared to 20 mothers (66.7%) in the control group (P=0.010).
Conclusion: This suggests that training can enhance mothers’ capabilities, lead to positive outcomes, and increase the intention to undergo natural childbirth. Therefore, using this method as an educational tool for childbirth preparation is highly recommended.
