Background & Aim: Risky behaviors are a common challenges faced with adolescence and can have significant impacts on their physical and mental health. The aim of the this study was to examine a causal model of the tendency towards risky behaviors in adolescents based on the bright dimensions of personality, considering the mediating effect of distress tolerance as well as the moderating influence of perceived authoritative parenting style.
Methods: This study was conducted with a fundamental objective and a descriptive-correlational method. The statistical population of this study consisted of all adolescents aged 16-20 years in Isfahan City, from which a total of 474 individuals were selected through a staged sampling method. Data was collected using Buri's (1991) Parenting Authority Scale, Simon and Qaher’s (2005) Distress Tolerance Scale, Kaufman’s (2019) Bright Personality Triad Scale and Alizadeh’s (2008) Iranian Adolescent Risk-Taking Scale. For data analysis, methods of structural equation modeling were employed using SPSS AMOS-26 software at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: In this study, 293 girls (61.8%) and 181 boys (38.2%) participated, with a mean age of 18.6 years. The direct path coefficients showed that the bright dimensions of personality had a significant negative impact on distress tolerance, and that distress tolerance had a negative and significant effect on risky behaviors (P<0.05, r=-0.226). Additionally, the bright dimensions of personality had a significant negative effect on risky behaviors. The indirect effect of bright dimensions of personality on risky behaviors through distress tolerance was found to be positive and also it was significant for individuals with different scores on authoritative parenting style (P<0.05, r=-0.286).
Conclusion: The authoritative parenting style can be an effective moderator in the connection between bright dimensions of personality and risky behaviors in adolescents. Furthermore, distress tolerance plays a significant role in mediating the reduction of risky behaviors. Hence, it is recommended that educational and supportive programs be developed for adolescents in order to improve their distress tolerance skills. This will ultimately lead to better mental health and a decrease in risky behaviors.
